Travel therapy is simply contract employment for a predetermined period of time. The usual travel assignment is for 13 weeks in length. Travel therapists are typically quick learners who are able to learn new systems quickly and hit the ground running. They are typically outgoing and eager to meet new people and see new places.

School systems are a huge source for travel therapy employment. These contracts are almost always for the duration of the school year. These openings are created through district needs. The benefit for most travel therapists working in school systems is the ability to gain the “perks” of travel while having the consistency of a 9-10 month contract.

Travel opportunities offer many advantages over permanent placement positions for the correct therapists. Therapists looking to see new locations expand their professional background through working with many different people, and who may be just a little adventurous will find a plethora of advantages. The advantages of travel opportunities will vary from Travel Company to travel company. On the whole however some major advantages would include:

When you decide to take an opportunity you will of course have an assignment confirmation to sign for that particular opportunity. Otherwise you are never obligated to anyone.

9. What are the usual assignment lengths with travel assignments?

Travel assignments are typically 13 weeks in length. Many times therapists will desire a longer contract and may have assignments up to 26 weeks in length. The longest assignment lengths are found in the school system market. The travel assignment length in schools is typically for the duration of the school year. Most school year contracts will be for 41 – 44 weeks. The school system opportunities are a great way to work in a travel or contract capacity and have the stability of a long-term assignment.

10. How long does the licensure process usually take?

This is a very tough question to answer directly. The licensing process varies greatly from state to state. Many states have included fingerprinting or live scan digital prints along with the usual paperwork and applications. The best way to gather information about licensure times is to talk directly with the licensing board.

11. What type of compensation package should I expect?

The dollar figures you should expect will vary greatly across the country. Many factors will come into play including location, setting, experience levels, special certifications, etc. Also, travel opportunities will pay more than permanent positions. There are also benefits to take into account, such as housing, health benefits, 401-k plans, licensure reimbursements and many more.
